Vital Statistics Electronic Registration of Death

The Vital Statistics Act requires Division Registrars to collect and submit personal particulars of the deceased for all deaths which occur in the province of Nova Scotia.The Division Registrar is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of this information.

The Vital Statistics Act requires Division Registrars to obtain the required information and signature related to the medical certificate of death. No burial permit is to be completed until the Division Registrar is in receipt of a signed medical certificate of death.

The Vital Statistics Act also requires that a burial permit be issued prior to the burial or cremation of a body. The burial or cremation of a body without the receipt of a burial permit is a contravention of the Vital Statistics Act.
